Box Score The American University volleyball team opened the Yale Classic with a 3-0 defeat of Stony Brook on Friday night.
Stony Brook (1-3) took an early lead in the first set before the Eagles tallied four straight points to take a 17-13 lead on back-to-back service aces from Allison Cappellino. The Seawolves came back within two, but American ended the set on a 4-0 run for the 25-19 victory.
The second set went back-and-forth, with seven ties and five lead changes. The Eagles took a five-point lead off a block from Morgan Hendrix and Sarah Katz before Stony Brook came back within one, 21-20, on an error by American. The Eagles were able to put it away as a block from Hendrix and Kylann Scheidt gave American set point, 25-22.
The third set was tied eight times before American (2-1) was able to gain the advantage. The Eagles broke away after a 10-10 tie and were able to hold off a Stony Brook rally for a 25-20 victory in set three.
Kelly McCaddin led the Eagles with 12 kills while Hendrix hit a team-best .500, tallying seven kills with zero errors. Cappellino registered 10 digs with two service aces as Scheidt had a team-high 29 assists. Hendrix and Sara Rishell led American with four blocks apiece.
American outhit Stony Brook .196 to .031 in the match. Melissa Rigo led the Seawolves with 16 kills, hitting .206. Nicole Parkas had a team-best 11 digs.
The Eagles continue play in the Yale Classic tomorrow, taking on Texas A&M at 11 a.m. before facing host Yale at 7 p.m.
