Kane scored for second time in as many matches for the
American University men's soccer team on Sunday, but it was not
enough as the Eagles were edged, 2-1, by Cal State Northridge. The
match was AU's second contest in the Wilson Titan Classic at Cal
State Fullerton in Fullerton, Calif.
After a scoreless first half, Kane struck with the goal in the
47th minute. The opportunity was setup on a cross by Patrick
Mehlert as Kane found the upper left portion of the
net. For Kane, the goal is his 15th career score in 40 matches at
AU.
Cal State Northridge (2-0), however, fired back with two goals
over a three minute span to erase the 1-0 deficit and take the
advantage. The game-tying goal came in the 51st minute as Edwin
Rivas beat AU goalkeeper Billy
Knutsen to the left post. Then what turned out to be
the game-winning goal was scored by Beto Velasquez in the 54th
minute off a feed from Yuval Barak.
Cal State Northridge outshot the Eagles by a 16-11 margin,
including a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. CSUN registered four
corner kicks while AU had two.
Mehlert led AU with three shots in the match while both Kane and
Ryan
Morales recorded two. Knutsen made five saves in goal
for the Eagles.
Following the tournament, Kane, Morales, and Cristobal Soto were selected to the Wilson
Titan Classic All-Tournament Team.
