The American University volleyball team picked up its first win
of the season with a 3-0 sweep of George Mason on Saturday night.
American's wins came by set scores of 25-20, 25-10 and 25-18.

Crum led the Eagles with the double-double, tallying a
team-high 12 kills and 16 digs, hitting .310 on the day. Kelly
McCaddin and Sara
Rishell also recorded double-digit kills with 11 and
10, respectively. Kylann
Scheidt posted a team-high 35 assists while Allison
Cappellino had a team-high 19 digs.
American (1-1) went up 19-9 early in the first set before George
Mason (0-2) was able to come back on a 6-1 run to cut the Eagles'
lead to 21-15. The Patriots saved the match point with a kill from
Lolade Owokoniran for the 24-20 score, but a service error by
Morghan Martin gave the Eagles the set victory, 25-20. The Eagles
jumped out to an early lead in set two and continued to dominate,
outscoring George Mason by a 10 to two margin to close out the
second set.
The Eagles took a 5-0 lead in the third set before George Mason
was able to come back within two with back-to-back kills from Lana
Zonjic and Laura Spencer. But American was able to break away once
again, with the Patriot only coming within three points down the
stretch.
American outhit George Mason .269 to .113 as a team in the
match. The Patriots were led by Spencer and Zonjic with nine kills
apiece with Bernetta Moore and Spencer adding 12 and 11 digs,
respectively.
The Eagles will be back in action next weekend when they travel
to New Haven, Conn. for the Yale Classic. American will first face
Stony Brook on Friday, August 31 at 5 p.m. before taking on Texas
A&M at 11 a.m. and host Yale at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
