American University student-athletes earned a department-record
3.42 grade-point average in the spring 2012 semester. In
addition, 60 total student-athletes were named to the Dean's
List, which requires a 3.5 GPA and a total of at least 15 credits
for the semester, while 14 student-athletes earned perfect 4.0 GPAs
in the semester.
"Our student-athletes continue to excel both in the classroom
and on the fields of play," remarked Director of Athletics and
Recreation Keith Gill. "Achieving a cumulative
grade-point average as a department of over a 3.4 is a credit to
our student-athletes, coaching staffs, and our academic support
staff led by Maureen Breslin and Ashley
Ackerley."
In the spring semester, seven individual teams recorded a GPA of
at least 3.4. This list included men's basketball,
women's basketball, men's cross country/track and
field, field hockey, lacrosse, women's soccer, and
volleyball.
Fourteen student-athletes overall earned a perfect 4.0 GPA in
the spring semester: Jaclyn Anspach (public communication,
field hockey), Emily Burton (psychology,
lacrosse), Jen Dumiak (biochemistry,
women's basketball), Ryan Flores (psychology, wrestling),
Rob Grell (mathematics, swimming and
diving), Rebecca Heath (anthropology,
volleyball), Paige Lin (interdisciplinary
studies, lacrosse), Greg Lush (law and society, cross
country/track and field), Sam
Miller (public communication, swimming and diving), Eliza Morgan (business administration,

men's soccer).
In the fall semester, AU student-athletes combined for a 3.31
GPA, giving the Department a 3.37 mark for the academic year with
61 Dean's List honorees. Four of the seven teams to earn over
a 3.4 in the spring -- women's basketball, field hockey,
lacrosse, and women's soccer -- hit that mark in the fall
semester as well.
Nine total student-athletes earned a 4.0 GPA in the fall
semester, including Heath, Lin, Morgan, and Slattery, each of whom
also recorded a 4.0 in the spring. The other five student-athletes
to register a 4.0 in the fall semester were Leah Breen (health promotion, swimming
and diving), Natalie Ellenberger (health promotion,
field hockey), Matt Makowski (biology, men's
soccer), Daniel Mitchell (business
administration, wrestling), and Michael Roberts (physics, men's
soccer).
Additionally, four student-athletes were named Patriot League
Scholar-Athlete of the Year for their respective sport throughout
the year. The winners were Alexis Dobbs (women's
basketball), Heath (volleyball), Makowski (men's soccer), and
Jenna Stasiewicz (women's
soccer).
For the year, 158 student-athletes were named to the Patriot
League Academic Honor Roll, which requires a 3.2 GPA during a
team's championship semester. Four teams -- men's
basketball, women's basketball, field hockey, and
women's soccer -- earned the most selections of any Patriot
League school in their respective sports.
