Dobbs Named Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Sophomore guard Alexis Dobbs of the American University women's basketball team has been selected as the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year, conference officials announced Tuesday. Dobbs becomes the second AU women's basketball student-athlete to earn the prestigious award.

"This is a tremendous accomplishment for Lex," remarked Head Coach Matt Corkery. "To be recognized as the league's premier student-athlete as only a sophomore says a lot about Lex both on and off the court. She works as hard as anybody in everything she does and this is a well-deserved honor for her."

On the court, the Berea, Ohio, native has started all 28 games this season en route to All-Patriot League First Team honors. She finished the regular season as AU's second-leading scorer with 11.1 points per game, ninth-best in the Patriot League. She also ranks sixth in the league in assists per game (3.0), fifth in steals per contest (1.9), third in three-point percentage (37.1), second in three-pointers made per game (2.3), and second in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.3). She has scored in double figures in 17 games this season, including in seven of the last nine contests.

In Wednesday's win over Bucknell, Dobbs hit the game-winning three-pointer with 0.7 seconds left to lift AU to the win and preserve the undefeated conference regular season. Other highlights on the season include knocking down six three-pointers at Lehigh, the most by any Patriot League student-athlete this season, as well as being named to the Cal Poly Thanksgiving Invitational All-Tournament Team.

Dobbs played a key role in American's 22-6 regular season, which included its historic 14-0 conference run. The Eagles won the conference by a Patriot League-record five games over second-place Lehigh. In her two seasons at American, she has made 55 starts while appearing in all 59 games. AU is 44-15 in her two seasons, including a 24-4 mark in Patriot League play with a pair of regular season titles.

In the classroom, Dobbs carries a 3.8 cumulative GPA as a Biology major. Earlier this year, she was named to the Capital One Academic All-District Team. She was honored on the Dean's List both semesters last year as well as the 2011 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.

Dobbs joins Liz Hayes as the only other AU women's basketball student-athlete to be named the league's Scholar-Athlete. Hayes earned the honor in back-to-back seasons in 2006-07 and 2007-08. She also earns a spot on the conference's Academic All-Patriot League Team, honoring the top-five student-athletes from the conference.
