Box Score
The American University men's basketball team suffered its first
home loss of the season on Thursday against the top-seeded Bucknell
Bison, 55-50. The Eagles led early but a second half surge from the
Bison was too much as American's 11-game home win streak was
snapped.
Daniel
Munoz recorded a team-high 15 points with four assists
as Troy
Brewer added 13 and Tony
Wroblicky tallied 11 points with a team-high eight
rebounds.
"You look at the stats and both teams struggled to shoot the
ball…it comes down to two things, one is the offensive
rebounds. They had 12 and at least one, maybe two of the three's
came after they got an offensive rebound," said Head Coach Jeff Jones following the game. "And of
course Mike Muscala, he's just a force in there, he's a really good
player and we did everything that we could to try to battle him but
he obviously came up with another big game."
American (18-10, 9-4) opened the night with a 16-4 run to take a
18-8 lead early with 10:13 remaining. A three-pointer from Cameron
Ayers ended the Eagles run as the Bison were able to cut the lead
to 20-17 with 5:59 left.
But Bucknell (21-8, 11-2) continued to chip away at the Eagles'
lead in the closing minutes of the first half. Bryson Johnson hit a
three-pointer to put the score at 24-22 with 2:04 remaining before
Brewer added a pull-up jumper to put the lead back at four. A pair
of free throws from Muscala cut American's lead to 26-24 at the end
of the first half.
American shot 35.7 percent from the field as Brewer led the team
with nine points in the first half. Charles
Hinkle recorded a team-high four rebounds. Muscala led
the Bison with 14 points in the first half with the team shooting
31.0 percent from the field and 20.0 percent from beyond the arc.
Both teams were perfect from the foul line in the first half.
The game was tied twice in the opening minutes of the second
half before a three from Bryson Johnson gave the Bison a 33-32 lead
with 13:12 left to play. Bucknell went on a 12-0 run to take the
50-40 lead at 2:22 before a three from Munoz cut it to 50-43.
The Eagles were able to bring the score within four points on a
pair of free throws from Munoz with 55 seconds to play, but the
Bison converted on 5-of-9 foul shots down the stretch for the 55-50
final score.
"That was the key difference, Bucknell hit the big shots down
the stretch," Coach Jones said.
American shot 36.5 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from
beyond the arc. The Bison shot 33.3 percent from the field and 46.7
percent from three-point range. Both teams shot 66.7 percent from
the charity stripe. Muscala led Bucknell with a game-high 26 points
and 14 rebounds as the Bison held a 39-36 advantage in rebounds and
an 12-8 advantage in offensive boards.
The Eagles return home this Saturday, February 25 at 4 p.m. when
they host Lafayette on Senior Day. Tickets are still available for
