Box Score
The American University men's basketball team cruised to a 69-47
victory over the Navy Midshipmen Wednesday night, improving to a
perfect 11-0 in Bender Arena.
Charles
Hinkle scored a game-high 18 points for the Eagles,
shooting 6-of-9 from the field and 4-of-5 from three while also
grabbing four rebounds. Tony
Wroblicky notched his second career double-double with
13 points and 12 rebounds. Simon
McCormack and Daniel
Munoz finished with nine and eight points,
respectively.
The Eagles also played their best defensive game of the season,
holding Navy to a season-low 47 points on 31.8 percent shooting.
Thurgood Wynn led the Midshipmen with 10 points and no other Navy
player finished with more than seven.
"It's quite a relief to get this win, more than a real high,"
Head Coach Jeff Jones said after the game. "After
losing to Holy Cross and playing the way that we did, it was
important for us to bounce back and play with a lot of intensity,
and clearly we did."
American (17-9, 8-3 PL) shot the ball well in the early going,
connecting on four of its first five shots and jumping out to a
10-0 lead at the 16:42 mark. Navy (3-22, 0-11) responded with a
quick three before the Eagles found their groove once again, going
on a 14-4 run over the next 9:22. Another Hinkle three and four
points from McCormack fueled American in the rest of the half
giving the Eagles a 36-12 advantage at the end of the first
half.
Hinkle led all scorers in the first with 16 points on a perfect
6-of-6 shooting, including going 4-of-4 from beyond the arc.
Wroblicky also had a strong half with seven points, seven boards
and two steals. American shot 54.2 percent from the floor in the
first half to Navy's 21.7 percent.
The Eagles picked up where they left off, opening the second
half on a 7-2 run before the first timeout. American led by as many
as 31 before Sugars completed a pair of three-point-plays for Navy,
making it 48-20 at the 13:11 mark. McCormack flipped a hook shot in
the lane and freshman Kyle
Kager had a strong putback in the game's closing
minutes for the final 69-47 mark.
American outshot the Midshipmen 49.1 percent to 31.8 percent and
converted nearly half of their three-point attempts (8-of-17). They
also worked hard on the defensive end, outrebounding Navy 33-24 and
allowing just three three-point field goals in the game.
American will hit the road this weekend to face the Army Black
Knights on Saturday, February 18 at 4 p.m. The Eagles will then
wrap-up the Patriot League regular season with back-to-back games
at Bender Arena, Thursday, February 23 against Bucknell and
Saturday, February 25 against Lafayette.
