Volleyball Clinches PL Tournament Bid with 3-0 Win at Lafayette

The American University volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 victory over Lafayette on Saturday afternoon to clinch a bid to the 2012 Patriot League Tournament.

Sara Rishell hit a team-best .524, notching 13 kills on just two errors. Kristyna Lindovska hit .400 on the day, tallying seven kills on one error, and also adding seven digs with a career-best four service aces. Kylann Scheidt dished out 32 assists with a team-high eight digs. American outhit the Leopards, .333 to .115, in the match.

Lafayette (9-15, 2-10) opened the match with back-to-back points before the Eagles registered five unanswered tallies for the 8-3 lead. American continued to roll, taking a 15-7 lead on three consecutive kills by Rishell. The Eagles took a 10-point lead after a 4-0 run and continued to shut down the Leopards' offense to pick up a 25-15 victory in the first set.

The second set featured five ties before American (18-9, 9-3) was break away after four consecutive points for a 19-13 advantage. The Leopards cut it to a five-point match on an American attack error, but the Eagles were able to roll for the 25-16 set two win.

American opened the third set on a 7-0 run for the 9-2 lead. Lafayette made it a four-point match on a kill from Kaitlynn Zoller. The Eagles continued to roll, taking a 20-10 lead on an ace by Kelly McCaddin. American closed out the set with three straight points for the 25-13 win to complete the sweep.

Zoller led the Leopards with nine kills, hitting .214. Sara Frohnapfel tallied a team-high 26 assists with Lafayette's lone ace of the match. Michelle Woodworth led the defensive effort with 10 digs.

American will make its 12th straight appearance in the Patriot League Tournament. The Eagles have won the conference title in 10 of the last 11 years.

American closes out the regular season next weekend when it hosts Colgate on Friday, November 9 at 7 p.m. and Bucknell on Saturday, November 10 at 4 p.m. in Bender Arena. Both matches will be broadcast live on Eagles Vision TV.
