Defensive Effort Lifts Volleyball to 3-1 Win at Morgan State

­­The American University volleyball team recorded a 3-1 victory over Morgan State on Wednesday, as the Eagles held the Bears to a .053 hitting percentage in the match.

American (10-7, 2-2) went on a 6-0 run in the first set, 14-8, after Morgan State took an early lead. A kill from Samantha Prescott put the Eagles' advantage at four. American was able to close out the set with three straights points, with a kill from Sara Rishell notching the 25-13 victory.

The second set featured 11 ties and seven lead changes before Morgan State (0-16, 0-3 MEAC) was able to tie the match on a pair of errors by the Eagles, taking a 26-24 set two win.

The Bears took an 8-5 lead in the third set before American was able to come back to take a 19-13 advantage on a Morgan State error. Zuri Smith registered a kill to cut American's lead to 23-18 but Rebecca Heath and Rishell gave the Eagles the 2-1 match advantage with a block for the 25-19 victory.

American jumped out to an 11-3 lead in the fourth set and were able to continue its run, taking an 11 point advantage with a block from Kristyna Lindovska and Morgan Hendrix. Morgan State was able to prevent match-point with three consecutive tallies but a service error from Arianna Hayden gave the Eagles the win.

Heath led American with nine kills in the match, hitting .333, while Lindovska tallied seven kills with a .455 hitting percentage. Kylann Scheidt had a team-best 17 assists while Allison Cappellino led the Eagles with 15 digs and three service aces. Hendrix recorded a team-high five blocks.

Prescott had a team-best 12 kills for Morgan State while Hayden added eight.

American will resume Patriot League play on Friday, October 5 at 7 p.m. when it hosts Navy. The match will be broadcast live on Eagles Vision TV.
