Men's Soccer Holds Off Lehigh to Secure Patriot League Tournament Berth

Box Score

For the fifth consecutive time, the American University men's soccer team clinched a berth to the Patriot League Tournament with a 1-0 win over Lehigh on Saturday night in Bethlehem, Pa. The Eagles also secured the right to host the event at Reeves Field for the second year on November 9 and 11.

Charlie Hunter scored the Eagles' lone goal in the 47th minute off a Colin Seigfreid assist.

American (9-5-2, 4-0-2) had early opportunities in the first half. Conor Osborne had a shot from atop the 18-yard box that was blocked by Lehigh's Ben Davis. In the 37th minute, Hunter sent a free kick into the box which was deflected out to Ryan Morales. His first shot was blocked but his second effort found Seigfreid inside the box before goalkeeper Ciaran Nugent was able to cover the ball to send the match into the intermission without a score.

Hunter and the Eagles were able to find the back of the net 69 seconds after the break on an early counter attack. Seigfreid received a clearance pass on the left wing and was able to beat several Mountain Hawk defenders before finally finding a streaking Hunter just beyond the 18-yard box. The freshman was able to tap in his second goal of the season to give American the 1-0 advantage.

Lehigh (4-12-0, 2-4-0) outshot the Eagles 18-5 in the second half, but were unable to find the equalizer. Billy Knutsen recorded a career-high 10 saves in the game.

With less than 10 minutes to play, Lehigh put pressure on the Eagles' defense. Davis headed a cross over the goal and Knusten blocked two consecutive shots from Brian Suchoski and Cameron Omsberg. The American defense held on to pick up the 1-0 road win.

Lehigh outshot the Eagles 23-11 as Knusten was able to make nine saves in the second half to pick up another shutout. The Mountain Hawks had a 4-0 corner kick advantage.

American returns to Reeves Field on Tuesday for its final non-conference match of the season as the Eagles face Princeton at 3 p.m. The match will be broadcast on Eagles Vision TV.
