Box Score The American University volleyball team swept Howard, 3-0, in a non-conference match on Wednesday night. Sara Rishell led the Eagles with 13 kills, hitting .500 in the game.
Rishell recorded just one error, leading American (13-8, 4-3 PL) as it outhit the Bison, .233 to .136. She also posted a team-high four blocks. Juliana Crum added six kills while Kelly McCaddin recorded a team-best 13 assists. Allison Cappellino led the defensive effort for the Eagles with 16 digs and Bree Scarbrough notched three service aces.
The first set was tied 10 times before Howard (0-18, 0-6 MEAC) took a 20-16 lead on a kill from Skylar Arbuckle. American tallied four straight points to cut the Bison's lead to one, 23-22. Megan Lagerlef's kill set up set point for Howard but a service error by Stephanie Shultis brought it back to a one-point game. The Eagles were able to tie it on an attack error by Jalezza Stoudermire and registered two more tallies for the 26-24 win.
American took an early lead before the Bison were able to come back for the 11-8 lead when Crum's attack went out of bounds. The Eagles came back to tie it 18 and held onto the lead for the remainder of the match, closing out the set with three consecutive points for the 25-21 victory and 2-0 match lead.
The Eagles jumped out to a 10-4 lead early in the third set. Howard fought back to within two points, but American responded with a 7-0 run for the 21-12 advantage. The Bison were able to add three more tallies before Crum notched match point to secure the sweep.
Lagerlef tallied 14 kills to lead Howard while Alexis Skinner had a team-high 15 digs. Shultis recorded 31 assists to pace the Bison offense.
American closes out its road slate this weekend with a pair of Patriot League contests against Holy Cross on Friday, October 19 at 7 p.m. and Army on Saturday, October 20 at 4 p.m.
