Box Score The American University men's soccer team recorded a 1-1 double-overtime draw with Lafayette on Saturday night in a match against the top two teams in the Patriot League.
American (6-5-2, 2-0-2) took the 1-0 lead off a goal from Dale McDonald in the 15th minute, recording his fifth goal of the year with an unassisted tally. The Leopards tried to add the equalizer before the break but were unable to convert despite outshooting the Eagles, 5-3, in the first half.
Lafayette (5-7-2, 2-1-1) continued to pressure the American defense and was finally able to tie the match in the 89th minute. Peter Adubato sent in a cross to Brandon Turner, who was able to put it past Billy Knutsen for the 1-1 score.
The Leopards registered two shots in the first overtime period, but Knutsen came up with the saves to keep the match tied. Both teams posted shots in the second overtime period with neither team able to convert to break the tie.
Lafayette held a 15-6 advantage in shots with a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. Both teams had three corner kicks in the match. Knutsen tallied four saves in goal for American.
American will return to Reeves Field on Wednesday, October 17 when it hosts Longwood at 3 p.m. for a non-conference match. It resumes Patriot League play when it hosts Navy on Saturday, October 20 at 1 p.m. Both matches will be broadcast live on Eagles Vision TV.
