American University men's soccer defender Jay Shoates was named the BRINE
Patriot League Rookie of the Week, conference officials announced
Monday. He was also recognized as the American University
Student-Athlete of the Week Presented by GEICO by Department of
Athletics officials.
The Sterling, Va. native helped the Eagles to a 1-1 week,
including a 1-0 shutout victory over Bucknell in American's
Patriot League home opener. Shoates earned his second and third
career starts this week, including in a 2-0 loss to Loyola (Md.) on
Tuesday night. He had a huge impact in Saturday's victory,
helping to limit the Bison's scoring opportunities throughout
the game. The freshman helped to anchor American's defense as
it held Bucknell scoreless despite 13 shot attempts, limiting the
Bison to five shots on goal.
Shoates and the Eagles will return to action on Saturday,
October 3 at 7:30 p.m. when they continue Patriot League play at
Army to open a string of three road games. American will be back at
Reeves Field on Wednesday, October 17 when they host Longwood at 3
p.m.
