Volleyball Rallies to Earn Five Set Win at Army

Box Score

Facing a 2-1 deficit, the American University volleyball team bounced back to win the final two sets and claim the 3-2 victory over Army Friday night in West Point, N.Y. The triumph for the Eagles came by set scores of 21-25, 25-18, 17-25, 27-25, and 15-11 as they have now won five straight matches.

American (10-9, 3-0 PL) was led by a balanced attack as five Eagles recorded double-digit kills. Juliana Crum paced AU with 18 kills while Rebecca Heath and Sara Rishell each recorded 12. Kelly McCaddin and Morgan Hendrix each had 10 while hitting at .450 and .321, respectively. Alexandra Hammer dished out 45 assists for the Eagles.

Defensively, Crum tallied 18 digs to earn her third consecutive double-double. Monika Smidova (16) and Megan Rosburg (15) were also in double figures along with Heath, who had 10. Additionally, Rishell led AU's blocking efforts with two block solos and four block assists.

After a .154 team hitting percentage in the opening set, the Eagles found their stride in the next stanza, recorded a .424 team clip to level the match at one set all. Army (11-5, 2-1 PL) took control of the third set, again holding the Eagles to a sub-200 mark at .125. But American responded once again in the fourth frame to hit .341 and draw even at two all heading to the deciding set.

A key play in the fourth came on an Army match point at 25-24, although Heath came up big with a kill to tie it at 25. After an Army attack error, Heath struck again with another kill to give the Eagles the 27-25 victory and send the match to the fifth.

In the fifth, AU jumped out to a quick 6-1 advantage, which included a pair of blocks by Rishell. The Eagles stretched the advantage to 11-4 on a block assist by Crum and McCaddin. Hendrix tallied the final kill on match point to give the Eagles the come-from-behind 3-2 victory.

American will look to stay perfect in Patriot League play when it visits Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon. First serve from Worcester, Mass., is scheduled for 2 p.m.
