Box Score The American University men's soccer team played a scoreless first half at George Mason on Saturday night, but the Patriots responded with three second-half goals to earn the 3-0 victory and claim the D.C. College Cup title.
Despite the setback, a trio of AU juniors -- Marco Dej, Adem Gokturk, and Ryan Morales -- earned D.C. College Cup All-Tournament Team honors. American (1-2-1) defeated George Washington by a 3-2 margin on Thursday afternoon in its first match in the annual tournament.
On Saturday evening, George Mason (2-1) tallied its three goals in the 59th, 72nd, and 83rd minutes of play. The first score, which turned out to be the game-winner, came off the foot of Taylor Morgan, who was named the tournament's most valuable player. Verneri Valimaa and Wesley Sever added George Mason's final two tallies to set the final margin.
AU goalkeeper Matt Makowski was challenged all night and recorded eight saves on 17 Patriot shots. The senior made two fantastic sliding stops in the first half, which was a key factor in the scoreless opening 45 minutes.
The Eagles, who were playing their fourth match in an eight-day stretch, found little on the offensive end over the course of the 90 minutes. Cristobal Soto recorded AU's only two shots in the match.
American will look to regroup when it hosts Liberty in its home opener this Friday, September 9. Game time from Reeves Field is scheduled for 5 p.m., and the match can be watched live on Eagles Vision TV, part of AUeagles.com.
