Kane's Tally Pushes Men's Soccer Past Virginia Tech; Watch Highlights

Box Score

An Alassane Kane strike in the 32nd minute lifted the American University men's soccer team to a 1-0 triumph over visiting Virginia Tech Tuesday afternoon at Reeves Field.

The scoring play for American (3-6-1) was started by Colin Seigfreid, who earned his team-leading fifth assist of the season and third in the last two matches. He fed the pass to Kane as he fired a shot from 20 yards out that deflected off a Hokie defender and slid past goalkeeper Kyle Renfro. For Kane, the goal was his fourth of the campaign.

Virginia Tech (3-6-0) pressured the AU defense throughout the second half, although the Hokies were unable to find the equalizer. The best chance for Virginia Tech came in the 59th minute when Kevin Reitzel hit the left post on a header from close range.

For the match, the Hokies outshot American by a 17-12 margin due to their 11-2 advantage in the second half. The Eagles, however, recorded four shots on goal compared to only three for Virginia Tech.

Billy Knutsen made his first start of the season in goal for American, registering his second-career shutout in only his third-collegiate match. He has now allowed only one career goal in 306 minutes of action during his three appearances as an Eagle.

The Eagles will look to improve to 2-0 in Patriot League play when they face two-time defending conference champion Bucknell on Saturday, October 1. First kick from Lewisburg, Pa., is set for 7 p.m.
