Volleyball Overcomes Slow Start in 3-1 Victory Over Colgate; Watch Highlights

The American University volleyball team extended its winning streak to three matches on Saturday with a 3-1 victory over Colgate in a rematch of last year's Patriot League Championship.

Four Eagles recorded double-digit kills in the team's victory. Juliana Crum led American (8-9, 2-0 PL) with 15 to go along with her three service aces and she recorded another double-double with 14 digs. Morgan Hendrix, Sara Rishell and Rebecca Heath tallied 14, 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Hendrix led AU in hitting percentage with a .419 performance, while Rishell (.370) and Crum (.303) were also productive on the attack.

AU hit .320 as a team and held Colgate (4-10, 1-1 PL) to a .168 hitting clip. Crum led AU with her aforementioned 14 digs while Alexandria Miller and Alexandra Hammer each recorded double-digit digs with 13 and 10, respectively. Hammer also was recorded two service aces to complement her 35 assists, a team-high. Additionally, the Eagles recorded 11 total team blocks, led by Rishell's seven block assists and Hendrix's six.

The Eagles dropped the first set 25-22 despite hitting .340 and recording 20 kills to the Raiders' 17. In the second set, the Eagles stepped up the pressure, holding Colgate to a .000 hitting percentage en route to a 25-16 victory.

In the crucial third set, American and Colgate exchanged the lead several times until the Eagles took a 14-13 lead and eventually won the set, 25-21.  Crum and Rishell combined for nine kills and four digs during the set. Rishell also hit .833 in the third set. Defense proved to be key again in the fourth set as American held the Raiders to a .048 hitting percentage in the 25-17 victory.

The Eagles advance their Patriot League record to 2-0 after back-to-back wins this weekend.  American will step out of conference for a Tuesday night matchup against Morgan State. The action will get underway from Bender Arena at 7 p.m., and it will be broadcast live on Eagles Vision TV.
