Volleyball Welcomes No. 16 Oregon to Bender Arena

The American University volleyball team will host No. 16 Oregon on Wednesday, August 31 at 7:00 p.m. live on Eagles Vision TV.

The Eagles opened their 2011 season this past weekend going 1-1 in the D.C. Volleyball Challenge. American dropped its first contest 3-1 to George Washington despite a standing-room only crowd of 2,122 in Bender Arena. The team returned to the court Saturday to defeat Georgetown, 3-1.

Juliana Crum recorded back-to-back double-doubles to lead American last weekend. She will enter play Wednesday averaging 3.38 kps and 3.12 bps and holds a .312 hitting percentage. Morgan Hendrix averaged a team-best 3.62 kps and hit .377 in the opening weekend while Sara Rishell notched 3.50 kps and 1.00 bps while hitting .349. Monika Smidova and Alexandra Hammer, meanwhile, averaged 5.38 aps and 4.62 aps while sharing the setting duties.

Oregon also went 1-1 in its opening weekend of play, defeating No. 1 Penn State 3-1 before falling to No. 12 Minnesota 3-2. The Ducks were led by Alaina Bergsma who was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week after averaging 4.67 kps and 2.22 dps. Katherine Fischer added 3.62 kps and 2.12 dps while Lauren Plum dished out 10.56 aps and 2.00 dps.

American and Oregon met for the first time last year with the then No. 19 Ducks earning a 3-0 victory in Eugene, Ore.
