Box Score Juliana Crum, Alexandra Hammer and Monika Smidova each recorded a double-double to lead the American University volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Georgetown Saturday in the D.C. Volleyball Challenge. The Eagles victory came by set scores of 25-22, 27-25, 23-25 and 25-22.
Crum and Morgan Hendrix scored a match-high 15 kills with Crum also notching 12 digs for her second double-double in as many days. Hammer and Smidova tallied 25 assists and 18 assists, respectively, while sharing the setting duties and chipped in 10 digs apiece. Sara Rishell finished the afternoon with 14 kills and eight digs.
American (1-1) outhit Georgetown (1-1) .299 to .233 and committed just 13 errors in the match. The Eagles also held an eight to six advantage in service aces with Hammer scoring a career-high three. Ashley Malone led the Hoyas' attack with 12 kills and 43 assists.
The Eagles jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the first set and never looked back en route to the 25-22 win. American also prevailed in the second set with a 27-25 victory, surviving five lead changes and 13 tied scores. Georgetown got the best of American in the third with a 25-23 win before the Eagles put the match away in the fourth with a 25-22 triumph.
George Washington defeated George Mason 3-1 in the first match of the day to improve to 2-0. The Eagles and Hoyas are both 1-1 in the tournament while George Mason stands at 0-2.
Due to the forecasted weather associated with Hurricane Irene, the final two matches of the D.C. Volleyball Challenge have been postponed. American's match against George Mason has been rescheduled for Wednesday, September 14 at 7:00 p.m. at George Mason. Details for the makeup of the George Washington and Georgetown match have yet to be announced.
The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday, August 31 when they host Oregon at 7:00 p.m. in Bender Arena live on Eagles Vision TV.
