Junior Seth Goldman provided the offense for American (0-0-1) with a 32nd minute goal. The play was setup off a cross from sophomore Colin Seigfreid as Goldman headed the shot past Buckeye goalkeeper Matt Lampson. Junior Ryan Morales was also credited with an assist on the play for the Eagles.
American played with the 1-0 advantage for the remainder of the first half and much of the second stanza until Ohio State (0-0-1) tied up the match in the 83rd minute. On the play, Ohio State's David Tiemstra chipped in a long pass to Kenny Cunningham, who beat AU goalkeeper Matt Makowski.
With the score 1-1 at the end of regulation, the match went to two 10-minute overtime sessions, although neither team was able to find the back of the net during the 20 minutes. The Buckeyes outshot American by a 6-1 margin in overtime, and held a 23-7 advantage for the match.
Sophomore Chris Kuramoto and Seigfreid led the Eagles with two shots apiece. Makowski, meanwhile, made five saves in goal while allowing the lone Ohio State score.
The No. 15 Buckeyes are coming off a 2010 season where they reached the third round of the NCAA Tournament. Ohio State is picked second in the Big Ten preseason poll following its 11-6-3 record a year ago.
"The team defending was great today and we were seven minutes away from beating a top-15 team," remarked Head Coach Todd West. "Overall, I am pleased with our starting point with this team. We have some things to clean up, but we will build on this."
The Eagles will remain in Central Pennsylvania over the weekend to face the tournament host, No. 18 Penn State on Monday, August 29. Match time from University Park is scheduled for 7 p.m.
