Men's Soccer Falls to Delaware in Exhibition

The American University men's soccer team surrendered a late goal that earned visiting Delaware to a 3-2 victory Wednesday afternoon in an exhibition match at Reeves Field. The Eagles drew even after falling in a two-goal deficit on scores by Seth Goldman and Alassane Kane, but were unable to find the third goal before Evans Frimpong's game-winner for Delaware.

The Blue Hens began the match strong, registering two goals in the opening 20 minutes to take the 2-0 advantage. John Dineen registered the first score in the 14th minute, which came off a deflection in front of the goal following a set piece. Less than four minutes later, Ben Raymond tallied the second score when his shot from 15 yards out got by AU goalkeeper Matt Makowski.

The Eagles trimmed the deficit to 2-1 when Goldman headed in a Mark Wysocki cross with just under 20 minutes to play in the opening half. AU continued to build the momentum at the start of the second half, and had several good scoring opportunities, including a couple of chances from Chris Kuramoto and a shot off the crossbar by Kane.

But Kane eventually converted the game-tying goal for American in the 75th minute when Cristobal Soto fed Kane on the right side. Off a tough angle, Kane was able to beat Delaware goalkeeper Brandon Paul to his left.

Delaware's Evans Frimpong scored the game-winner in the 84th minute when he was able to bring out substitute American goalkeeper Billy Knutsen and slide a shot into the corner of the net. The Blue Hens held on over the final six minutes to earn the exhibition win.

American and Delaware recorded 10 shots apiece, four of which were on goal for each side. Kane and Kuramoto led the Eagles with three shots each while Wysocki recorded two.

The Eagles will open the regular season when they take on a pair of Big Ten opponents next weekend. AU will face Ohio State on Saturday, August 27 before challenging Penn State on Monday, August 29.
