On February 12th, American University inducted its 42nd class
into the Stafford H. “Pop” Cassell Hall of Fame.
Honored were Ray (Crowe) West, CAS/BA '66, men's
swimming and diving and Liz Pike, SOC/BA '94, women's
soccer. The Master of Ceremonies was American University
alumnus and Turner Sports broadcaster David Aldridge, SOC/BA,
'87.
Ray (Crowe) West was a standout diver at American University,
where he captured the 1966 1-meter diving NCAA National
Championship (and was presented by former teammate Ben Van Dyk,
CAS/BS '67. Liz Pike was a pioneer for women's soccer
here at American University from 1990-1993 and was presented by her
sister, fellow soccer alum Julia Morrow CAS/BA '97. She still
holds the career record for goals with 66 and her 149 all-time
points rank first in program history.
American University Director of Athletics and Recreation Keith
Gill provided the introductions of those in attendance and American
University President Dr. Cornelius Kerwin SPA/BA '71 gave the
opening remarks for the alumni and friends in attendance. The crowd
also enjoyed a video in honor of the namesake Stafford H. "Pop"
Cassell which can be seen here.
Both Ray and Liz continue to follow American University
Athletics motto of Win. Learn. Lead in their careers and have left
