Brewer's 23 Not Enough as Men's Basketball Falls at St. Francis (Pa.)

The American University men's basketball team fell to St. Francis (Pa.), 66-61, snapping its eight-game winning streak, despite a 39-25 lead over the Red Flash at the break.

Troy Brewer led all scorers with 23 points as he went 7-for-9 from beyond the arc. Charles Hinkle, Blake Jolivette and Daniel Munoz each had 10 for the Eagles, as Hinkle, Munoz and Tony Wroblicky led the team with five boards apiece. Munoz also notched five assists and two steals for American.

American (8-3) jumped out to a 20-5 lead seven minutes into the game before an Ollie Jackson tre and Anthony Ervin two cut it to a 10-point game with 11:40 to play, 20-10.

The Red Flash were able to bring it within five before Brewer hit three straight three-pointers to put the Eagles back up 14, 31-17. Jackson would answer with a three of his own, but Brewer would hit two more to give American the 15-point advantage with 2:18 to play, 37-21. Daniel Fisher would add a jumper with 1:27 on the clock as the Eagles went into the half with the 39-25 lead.

Brewer led the Eagles with 18 in the first half, with all of his points coming off three-pointers as he went 6-of-7 from beyond the arc. Hinkle added 10 for American as Munoz had five. Hinkle and Munoz each had three boards as Wroblicky added one block in the first. American shot 56.0 percent from the field and 60.0 percent from three-point range in the first half. The Red Flash were led by Jackson with nine points, as the team shot 41.7 percent from the field and 60 percent from beyond the arc.

St. Francis (3-7) opened the second half on an 11-4 run. Brewer collected five straight points to retain the Eagles' 12-point lead with 11:31 to play, 50-38. The Red Flash made it a two-point game after a Jackson tip-in on an Eatherton miss with 6:08 remaining, 54-52. St. Francis took their first lead of the game off a Jackson three and an Eatherton lay-up-and-one, 60-56, with under two minutes remaining.

Stephon Whyatt hit a pair of free throws to keep St. Francis up by five, before a Simon McCormack lay-up would bring the Eagles back within three points, 62-59. American cut it to three once again following a Jolivette lay-up but free throws from Eatherton gave the Red Flash the 66-61 win, their first over a Patriot League opponent this season.

"We prepared our guys coming in that this team played well at home," said Head Coach Jeff Jones following the game. "The three was falling against their 1-3-1 in the first half and I don't think they played a single possession of that in the second."

American shot 44.4 percent from the field in the game and 43.5 percent from beyond the arc. St. Francis was 48.9 percent from the field and 50.0 from three-point range. Eatherton led the Red Flash with 21 points and nine rebounds while Jackson added 14 points.

The Eagles will face local rival No. 18 Georgetown at Verizon Center next Saturday, December 17 at noon. The game will be shown live on MASN.
