The American University men's basketball team posted its sixth straight victory on Thursday as they defeated UMBC, 69-58. The Eagles are now a perfect 4-0 in Bender Arena and have matched last season's longest win streak.
Charles Hinkle scored 18 points to lead all scorers, shooting seven-of-eight from the foul line. He has now scored double-digit points in every game this season, including posting at least 20 points during the first six games. Troy Brewer had 15 points for the Eagles as Daniel Munoz added 10. Tony Wroblicky notched a career-high 13 rebounds for American and also added four blocks.
Hinkle scored seven of the Eagles' first 13 points, as American jumped out to a 13-7 lead with 11:39 remaining in the game. UMBC took a 20-19 lead off a Chase Plummer jumper before Brewer answered with a three to put the Eagles back up two, 22-20. Jake Wasco would give UMBC back the lead off a lay-up and was credited with a basketball following a goaltending call on Wroblicky at 5:49, 24-22. Wasco would add another basket to give the Retrievers the four-point advantage with five minutes to play.
A steal from Ryan Cook and the easy lay-up would put UMBC up by six, before Hinkle was able to answer with a fade away jumper at 3:40, 28-24. Blake Jolivette's three would bring the Eagles back within one and Simon McCormack would add a bucket to give the Eagles the lead, 29-28. The teams would trade buckets over the next minute before Munoz would drain a three to give the Eagles the 34-32 lead with 36.4 seconds left in the first half. Brewer hit a three from the corner as the Eagles took the 37-32 lead into the half.
Hinkle had nine points in the first half for the Eagles as Brewer and Jolivette each added eight. Wroblicky had seven rebounds and two blocks to lead American on the defensive end. The team shot 45.2 percent from the field in the first half. UMBC was 45.5 percent from the field as Wasco led the Retrievers with eight points.
American opened the half on an 8-2 run just seven minutes into the game before a Plummer pull-up jumper at the foul line brought UMBC back within nine, 45-36. Another Munoz three put the Eagles back up 11 with 9:53 to play, 52-41.
Plummer added another jumper to bring UMBC within seven before a Brewer lay-up would give the Eagles the nine-point advantage once again with just over five minutes to play, 56-47. UMBC cut it within six with 1:36 to play, 60-54, but free throws from Hinkle, McCormack and Munoz would give the Eagles the 11-point victory, 69-58.
The Eagles shot 42.9 percent from the field and 62.5 percent from the line, as UMBC shot 36.7 percent from the field and 70.6 percent from the foul line. The Retrievers out-rebounded American, 41-36, in the game, while the Eagles held the 13-8 advantage in assists.
