Four Double-Digit Scorers Lead Men's Basketball Past Howard; Watch Highlights

Riley Grafft scored a career-high 21 points as four Eagles scored in double-digits to lead American to their fifth straight win with a 77-66 victory over Howard.

Grafft was 7-of-8 from the field and 6-of-6 from the line as he also added five rebounds. Charles Hinkle led the team with seven rebounds and recorded 17 points and two blocks. Troy Brewer and Daniel Munoz also scored in double-digits as they posted 14 and 10 points, respectively, with Brewer notching five assists. Tony Wroblicky had three blocks for the Eagles with four rebounds and six points.

American (5-2) opened the game on a 12-1 run as Blake Jolivette hit a fade away jumper to put the Eagles up 11 with under 15 minutes to play. Howard was able to cut the lead to nine after a Mike Phillips lay-up before American took a 13-point lead off a Grafft dunk and pair of Hinkle free throws. Dadrian Collins hit a three for the Bison but Munoz answered right back to give the Eagles the 21-8 lead with 10:02 remaining.

The Bison (2-4) went on a 7-0 run over the next minute before a Jolivette jumper brought the lead back to seven, 23-16, at 7:15. A pair of Collins free throws cut the lead to two, 26-24, but Grafft answered with a lay-up and Hinkle added two more free throws to bring it back to five, 30-25, with 2:08 in the game. Alphonso Leary added a lay-up with just under two minutes to play with Grafft adding a dunk to end the half with the Eagles up four, 34-28.

Grafft led the Eagles with 11 points in the first half as Brewer added seven and Hinkle had six. Hinkle and Wroblicky each had three rebounds. American shot 39.1 percent from the field, 42.9 percent from beyond the arc and 78.6 percent from the line. Leary had seven points and four rebounds for the Bison as the team shot 34.6 percent from the field and 22.2 from three-point range.

Wroblicky scored first for the Eagles as American took a 41-35 lead with 15:55 on the clock. Hinkle hit a three from deep and Munoz added two free throws to give American the 11-point advantage, 46-35, at 15:04. Grafft tied his previous career high (17) on his third dunk of the game, 55-44.

The Eagles continued to score as Wroblicky added a lay-up under the basket and Hinkle hit another three to put American up by 15 points with 6:07 to play, 63-48. Brewer, Grafft, Hinkle and Jolivette all added free throws to end the game and give American the 77-66 victory.

American shot 39.1 percent from the field and 40.0 percent from three-point range in the game. The team also shot 79.5 percent from the foul line. Howard held the advantage in rebounds (37-36) and shot 31.5 percent from the field and 70.0 percent from the line.

"When we focus we've looked pretty good," said Head Coach Jeff Jones following the game. "Obviously Riley has been raising the level of his play. When he's gotten out on the floor he's made a positive contribution."
