The American University volleyball team will look to
capture its 10th Patriot League Championship in 11 seasons on
Sunday, after defeating Colgate, 3-1, in the semifinals. The team
will now face the winner of Army-Lehigh on Sunday, November 20 at 2
p.m. in Bender Arena.
The top-seeded Eagles earned a 25-20 victory over No. 4 Colgate
in the first set before the Raiders were able to come back for the
25-22 set win in the second. But it was not enough as American was
able to come back from a 5-2 deficit in the beginning of the third
to sweep the final two sets, 25-19 and 25-17, to advance to
tomorrow's championship.
Rebecca
Heath recorded a double-double in the match, with a
team-high 14 kills and 12 digs, hitting .333 on the day. The senior
has now posted double-digit kills in 24 matches this season.
Juliana
Crum recorded a team-best 15 digs, also adding 12
kills for the Eagles. Patriot League Player and Rookie of the Year
Sara
Rishell posted ten blocks, with eight kills and six
digs. Alexandra
Hammer led the team with 23 assists as Monika
Smidova added 18, respectively.
American will be looking to win its 10th conference championship
in 11 seasons on Sunday. The Eagles defeated No. 2 Army in five
sets during their first meeting this year, but were able to win in
four, 25-18, 25-20, 23-25 and 25-18, when the Black Knights came to
Bender Arena.
No. 3 Lehigh handed the Eagles their only conference loss this
season, but the team was able to sweep the Mountain Hawks, 25-18,
25-17 and 25-13, at home.
