Men's Basketball Can't Complete Comeback Against UMES

The American University men's basketball team lost in overtime at UMES on Monday night, 64-62, after coming back to tie the game with 1.6 seconds left in regulation.

Charles Hinkle led all scorers with 25 points, hitting four three's and shooting 11-of-12 from the free throw line. Troy Brewer added 14 points and eight rebounds. Tony Wroblicky had 12 rebounds for the Eagles.

The Eagles (0-2) started the game on a 7-0 run heading into the first timeout. Hinkle hit two free throws and Brewer added a jumper. Hinkle then hit a three from deep with 17:14 on the clock. American continued to score, as Blake Jolivette, Simon McCormack, Daniel Munoz and Wroblicky all added consecutive buckets to put the Eagles up 17-7 with 7:12 left in the first half.

Hinkle continued to score for the Eagles, hitting a three with 2:48 remaining in the first, but Hillary Haley was able to tie the game at 23 with 1:38 on the clock. A pair of Hinkle free throws on a 1-and-1 put the Eagles back up by two, 25-23.

UMES (1-1) took a 26-25 lead with 44.7 seconds left. Hinkle added two to make it 27-26, but a three from Louis Bell at the end of the half would give the Hawks the 29-27 advantage.

American shot 36 percent from the field in the first half and 25 percent from three-point range. Hinkle led all scorers with 14 first half points as Wroblicky recorded seven boards. UMES shot 52.2 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from beyond the arc in the first half. The Hawks held the 14-13 advantage in rebounds and a 6-3 advantage in assists. Each team recorded nine turnovers, two steals and one block.

UMES was able to take an eight point lead with 14:05 remaining in the game, before a Brewer three was able to put the lead at five, 43-38. The Hawks were able to bring the lead to eight with 7:38 left following an Akeem Anderson lay-up.

A Brewer three and two pairs of Hinkle made free throws brought the Eagles within two with 1:32 left, 55-53. American was down two with 50.7 seconds remaining, but Jolivette was able to tie the game with a last second lay-up to end regulation.

In overtime, the Eagles jumped to a 62-56 lead with 3:05 on the clock, but five unanswered points from Bell put American up one with 1:35 left, 62-61. UMES took the lead with a pair of free throws from Percy Woods, who played all 45 minutes for the Hawks, and another free throw from Mark Robertson would give the team its 64-62 victory, despite a fade-away attempt from three by Hinkle at the buzzer.

The Hawks out-rebounded American, 42-35, in the game. The Eagles shot 32.3 percent from the field for the game and 26.9 percent from three-point range.

American will return to action on Wednesday, November 16 for the home opener against Florida Atlantic, with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m. from Bender Arena.
