The American University volleyball team hosted Navy on Friday night in a Patriot League match and the Eagles were victorious in three sets by scores of 25-11, 25-18, and 25-15.
American (17-10, 9-1 PL) won its 12th match in its last 13 contests as it controlled play from the outset, holding Navy (6-19, 1-9 PL) to a -.051 team hitting percentage. Rebecca Heath led the Eagles attack with 11 kills, only one error, and a .500 hitting percentage. Sara Rishell hit a team-best .571 with nine kills and one error as well. Bree Scarbrough was also productive for the Eagles with a .444 hitting clip and five kills as AU hit .280 as a team over the three sets.
Defensively, Juliana Crum paced AU with 15 digs while Heath chipped in seven. Crum added five aces as the Eagles registered 11 as a team. Monika Smidova, meanwhile, recorded a team-best 25 assists.
The win clinches American a berth in the four-team Patriot League Tournament, which will be played November 19-20 at the site of the regular season champion. AU has now earned a spot in the tournament field in all 11 seasons since joining the Patriot League in 2001.
The Eagles will return to action with a pair of home matches next weekend, beginning with a matchup against Holy Cross next Friday, November 4 at 7 p.m. AU will then face Army on Saturday, November 5 at 4 p.m. in a clash between the top two teams in the conference. Both matches will be available on Eagles Vision TV.
