Lumpkins Grabs 500th Rebound in 60-57 Win at Holy Cross

Box Score

Stephen Lumpkins turned in a double-double effort to lead the American University men's basketball team to a 60-57 win at Holy Cross Saturday.

Lumpkins finished the game with 20 points and 10 rebounds, shooting 9-of-12 from the floor for his fifth double-double of the year. Lumpkins also made history Saturday, as he entered the game having grabbed 497 career rebounds and with his third board early in the first half became the 27th Eagle in program history to amass 500 rebounds. Lumpkins now has 507 boards to his credit, six behind Jim Shickora '64 and Daryl Holmes '90 for 25th place all-time.

The win improves American to 14-6 overall and 4-1 in the Patriot League, matching the program's best start through five games since joining the conference in 2001-02. The Eagles are now in sole possession of second place in the League, with Bucknell putting its 4-0 record on the line at home tonight at 7:00 p.m. against Colgate. American has won three straight and seven of its last eight.

Vlad Moldoveanu added 14 points to the winning effort and helped the Eagles to a 40-26 advantage in points in the paint. Nick Hendra recorded eight points and four boards while Charles Hinkle netted seven.

Holy Cross (4-15, 3-2) was led by Andrew Keister and Devin Brown who each scored 14 points. American finished the day shooting 43.9 percent from the field while the Crusaders shot 41.5 percent.

Lumpkins and Moldoveanu carried the load early for American as the two combined to score each of the Eagles' first 13 points. Moldoveanu's layup six minutes in gave American the early 10-7 advantage but the Crusaders would counter with an 8-1 run to go on top 15-11. Lumpkins ended American's drought with his fourth basket in the early going and Daniel Munoz tied the game at 15 with his first points of the night.

Hendra scored four straight points to regain the lead and another Lumpkins bucket gave American a 21-18 edge. The Eagles led by as many as five points 27-22 following a Hinkle jumper and took a 27-24 margin into the locker room at the half.

Lumpkins tallied 11 points and six rebounds through the first 20 minutes, leading the Eagles to a 41.3 percent shooting percentage. Moldoveanu and Hendra each added six points as American held a 22-6 advantage in points in the paint.

Holy Cross started quickly in the second half and took a 32-30 lead on a Keister and-one. Andrew Beinert's jumper put the Crusaders in front 39-33 before American cut its deficit to 39-38 on a Tony Wroblicky put-back. Moldoveanu eventually tied the game at 43 and Lumpkins put the Eagles back on top 45-43 to cap off a 7-0 stretch.

Holy Cross retied the game at 45 but American used another 7-0 stretch with five points from Hinkle to open a 52-45 margin.  Back-to-back baskets by Lumpkins pushed the score to 56-48.

A 5-0 run pulled the Crusaders back to within two with just over two minutes remaining. Lumpkins was again the answer, however, giving American a four-point cushion, 59-55. Brown's lay-in with 31 seconds remaining once again got Holy Cross to within two, 59-57, but the Eagles were able to hold on down the stretch to take the 60-57 victory.

American will return to action Wednesday, January 26th against Navy in Annapolis, Md. at 7:00 p.m. The Eagles will then return to Bender Arena for a 4:00 p.m. showdown versus Lafayette on Saturday, January 29 in the team's annual 'Phil Bender' event.
