The American University volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 victory
Wednesday night in Bender Arena, defeating Coppin St. 25-8, 25-7,
25-17. Angelina
Waterman recorded a match-high 10 kills as the Eagles
combined to hit .359 for the match.
American (3-1) dominated play in the first set, rattling off
seven straight points to begin the match before taking a 17-1 lead
on Magdalena
Tekiel's third ace of the set. A Waterman kill
put the score at 21-5 with a Coppin State (0-4) error giving the
Eagles set point, 25-8. American hit .480 in the frame with 14
kills on 25 attempts and two errors. Defensively, the Eagles held
Coppin St. to a -.120 hitting percentage and allowed only three
kills.
American kept the pressure on in the second set, taking a 6-1
advantage following two Coppin St. errors. A 7-0 run midway through
the frame moved the score to 19-5 in favor of the Eagles with
Katerina
Cinkova, Tekiel and Juliana
Crum recording three straight kills during the
stretch. American finished the set off with a 5-0 run, which
included two Waterman kills, for set point, 25-7. The Eagles hit
.367 in the frame with 14 kills on 30 attempts and three errors
while limiting Coppin St. to a -.121 hitting percentage.
The two teams traded the lead six times in the early moments of
the third set before back-to-back kills by Bianca
Richardson and Tekiel broke a 13-all tie and gave
American a 15-13 advantage. A 7-0 run which included two Tekiel
aces put the Eagles on top 22-14 before a Crum ace earned American
match point, 25-17.
Waterman tallied a match-high 10 kills to lead American's
offensive attack as the Eagles finished the night with a
season-high .359 hitting percentage. Tekiel added eight kills from
the outside while middle blockers Cinkova and Richardson each
notched seven. Crum, who earned her first career start Wednesday,
recorded six kills.
The Eagles also notched a season-high 12 aces including six from
Tekiel. Krysta
Cicala added two aces while Cinkova, Crum, Deborah
Frantz and Waterman each recorded one.
American limited Coppin St. to a .011 hitting percentage,
allowing only 18 kills on 93 attempts and forcing 17 errors. Frantz
led the defensive charge with 17 digs as Richardson finished the
night with five total blocks.
The Eagles will return to action this weekend at the Colonial
Challenge in Willamsburg, Va. American will first take to the court
on Friday, September 3, against Hampton at 4:00 p.m. before
returning on Saturday, September 4, against Campbell at 10:00 a.m.
and William & Mary at 7:00 p.m. Live video will be available
