Box Score Led by Troy Brewer's 18 point, seven rebound performance, the American Unviersity men's basketball team went on the road to defeat UMBC Tuesday night 66-53 in Baltimore, Md.
Brewer scored his 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting, connecting on 4-of-8 attempts from three. Stephen Lumpkins notched his third double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds while Daniel Munoz matched his season-high with 10 points. The Eagles overcame a 38.5 percent shooting performance by hitting nine three-pointers and going 17-of-23 from the line.
American (6-3) shot just 1-of-12 to begin the game with Lumpkins providing the only basket through the first nine minutes. A Munoz three-pointer ended the drought and began a 15-3 stretch as the Eagles took a 20-13 advantage. Charles Hinkle scored five straight following Munoz's three and Lumpkins ended the run with a basket in the paint.
Brewer hit three straight three-pointers to extend the American margin to 33-16. American would take a 35-16 lead into the half, outscoring UMBC (0-10) 32-6 over the frame's final 11 minutes. Brewer led all scorers at the break with 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc. Munoz added eight points and two assists while Lumpkins totaled seven points and seven rebounds.
The Eagles led by as many as 23 points in the second half before a 15-2 run by the Retrievers moved the score to 52-42. Brewer connected on his fourth three-pointer to regain a 14-point edge but five straight points scored by Travis King pulled UMBC to within nine, 56-47, with 1:27 remaining.
American was able to ice the game down the stretch as Lumpkins and Brewer converted back-to-back three-point plays. Hinkle and Moldoveanu each added a pair of free throws, giving the Eagles their final 66-53 margin.
King scored a game-high 20 points to lead UMBC while Chris De La Rosa added 18. The Retrievers shot 39.0 percent from the floor and committed 14 turnovers leading to 10 American points.
American will continue its roadtrip on Thursday, December 16 when it takes on Northwestern in Evanston, Ill. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
