Box Score The American University men's soccer team travelled to Hamilton, N.Y., to take on Colgate on Saturday, November 6, and came up on the short end of a 1-0 decision.
The difference in the match proved to be a 33rd minute goal by Colgate's Steven Miller. Jeff Leach picked up the assist for the Raiders, which clinched the Patriot League regular season championship with the victory.
Colgate (8-5-5, 5-0-2 Patriot League) outshot the Eagles by a 15-9 margin in the match, including a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal.
American (6-8-3, 3-2-2 PL) was led on the offensive end by Alassane Kane and Mike Worden, who each fired two shots in the 90 minutes of play.
On the defensive side of the ball, goalkeeper Matt Makowski made six saves for AU. Miller's goal snapped a 268.14 scoreless streak for the American defense, which spanned over four matches.
"A number of guys stepped up and competed tonight," said Head Coach Todd West. "We are still searching for a total team effort, not only from the 11 on the field, but also the reserves. Colgate is a good side and deserves to host the Patriot League Tournament next weekend."
Despite the loss, the Eagles have still clinched a berth into next weekend's four-team Patriot League Tournament, which will be played at Colgate's Van Doren Field. AU will enter the tournament as the No. 3 seed, and will face second-seeded Lehigh on Friday at 8 p.m. The other semifinal will match top-seeded Colgate against No. 4 Bucknell at 5 p.m. The winners will play in the championship match Sunday at 1 p.m.
