Box Score A career night from Troy Brewer led the American University men's basketball team to a 66-54 win over Howard Tuesday night at Burr Gymnasium. American's victory improves the team to 5-0, its best start since 1985-86.
Brewer scored a career-high 24 points on 7-of-13 shooting from three-point range, tying him for the fourth most three-point field goals in school history. His 12 rebounds also marked a career-high as he recorded his first double-double.
Vlad Moldoveanu chipped in 21 points, his fourth 20-plus point performance of the season. Stephen Lumpkins added 14 points and nine rebounds.
Brewer began the game 2-of-2 from beyond the arc, giving American (5-0) a quick 6-0 lead. The Eagles held a 13-2 advantage following a pair of Lumpkins lay-ins and pushed the margin to 16-4 on Brewer's third trey. Brewer later added two more triples, putting the score at 28-12 with 8:00 to play.
The Bison made a run to pull within 11 but seven straight points from Moldoveanu helped the Eagles close out the half with a 37-23 lead. Brewer finished the first half with 15 points on five three-pointers. Moldoveanu added 14 points as American outshot Howard 45.5 percent (15-33) to 27.6 (8-29).
The Eagles struggled to find their mark through the early portion of the second half as Howard (1-4) cut its deficit to seven with a 10-3 stretch. Leading 42-35, Brewer hit yet another three and added a pair of free throws during a 6-1 American run to extend the lead back to 12, 48-36. The junior's seventh three-pointer of the night made it a 51-38 game.
The Bison kept within reach by hitting 15 free throws in the second half, and with 4:14 remaining trailed 55-45. American was able to hold on for the victory, however, hitting six free throws in the final 1:17 for the 66-54 win.
The Eagles finished the night shooting 36.7 percent (22-60) from the floor and 31.3 percent (10-32) from three. Howard shot 34.0 percent (16-47) overall while hitting 19-of-27 free throws. American outrebounded the Bison 49-31, their largest margin of the season, and dished out 17 assists.
