Box Score The American University volleyball team earned the right to play for the 2010 Patriot League Championship with a 3-0 win over fourth-seeded Bucknell Saturday at Bender Arena. The victory came by set scores of 25-17, 25-13 and 25-21.
American (28-2, 14-0) has won eight of the last nine Patriot League Championships and with its win Saturday improved to 17-0 all-time at Bender in tournament play. The Eagles' victory also improves their winning streak to 22 matches, one match shy of the record 23-match win streak posted by the 1994 squad. The Team's 28 wins are fourth most in school history.
The Eagles combined to hit .303 for the match, converting 42 of 89 attempts while committing just 15 errors. Angelina Waterman led all scorers with 14 kills and a .367 hitting percentage. She also tallied nine digs, two aces and two block assists. Katerina Cinkova and 2010 Patriot League Player of the Year Magdalena Tekiel added eight kills apiece.
Waterman and Deborah Frantz led American on the defensive side of the net with nine digs each, as the Eagles held Bucknell (10-17, 8-6) to just a .082 hitting percentage. Cinkova recorded six total blocks with Juliana Crum, Virginia Fitch, Tekiel and Waterman each adding two block assists.
American will meet No. 3 Colgate in the Patriot League Championship Match at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 21 at Bender Arena. The Raiders defeated No. 2 Army in Saturday's second semifinal, 3-1. The winner of Sunday's match will be crowned the 2010 Patriot League Champion and will earn the right to play in the NCAA Tournament.
