Box Score

The American University volleyball team once again defended its home court Friday night, defeating Colgate 3-0 in front of 625 fans to kick off the University's All-American Weekend. The win was the Eagles 15th straight and their 16th consecutive win in Bender Arena dating back to last season. The victory came by set scores of 25-14, 25-17, 25-19.

American (21-2, 8-0) traded points with Colgate (11-11, 4-4) early in the first set but rallied on the strength of a 7-0 run to go on top 14-6. Colgate pulled to within five points late in the set, 19-14, before six straight American points earned set point, 25-14.

The Raiders would take the early lead in the second set and remained in front midway through the frame, 13-12. A quick 3-0 spurt by the Eagles which included back-to-back Angelina Waterman kills gave American a 15-13 advantage, which it would later extend to 22-15 with a 5-0 jaunt. Katerina Cinkova earned set point with a kill, 25-17.

American led 6-3 to open the third and final set before Colgate rallied to even the score at 13. The Raiders would never take the lead, however, as the Eagles answered back with kills from Bianca Richardson and Waterman for a 15-13 margin. Four straight American points moved the score to 20-15 before a Colgate error gave the Eagles set point, 25-19.

Magdalena Tekiel scored a match-high 11 kills to go along with six digs, two blocks and one ace. She was complemented by Waterman who notched nine kills, eight digs and two blocks of her own. Cinkova, meanwhile, tallied eight kills on 13 attempts with zero errors for a .615 hitting percentage, and also added four digs and three block assists. Juliana Crum chipped in eight kills, eight digs and two blocks while Cassandra Ricketts turned in a six kill, four dig performance.

The Eagles combined to hit .304 for the match as Alexandra Hammer and Krysta Cicala dished out 22 assists and 21 assists, respectively. American's defense, meanwhile, held Colgate to a .019 hitting percentage, allowing the Raiders to score only 22 kills against 20 errors. Deborah Frantz led the defensive efforts with 17 digs from the back row while the team combined for nine blocks.

American will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, October 23, when it welcomes Bucknell to Bender Arena for a 3:00 p.m. match. Prior to the first serve, American will recognize the playing careers of its five graduating student-athletes, Cinkova, Frantz, Ricketts, Tekiel and Waterman.
