The American University men's basketball team lost to Army on
Wednesday night, 68-48, in West Point, N.Y. Vlad
Moldoveanu led all scorers with a game-high 22 points
but it was not enough as the Black Knights finished the evening
shooting 54.0 percent from the field.
American fell behind 7-3 to open the game as Jeremy Hence scored
five straight points to spark a 7-0 Army run. The Black Knights
extended their lead to 11-6 on back-to-back Eric Zastoupil layups
before Moldoveanu hit a three-pointer in transition to make it an
11-9 game. Moldoveanu's triple was answered by a 9-0 Army stretch
as the Black Knights extended their advantage to 20-9 with 5:53
remaining.
Steve
Luptak ended American's drought with a three-pointer
from the left corner but Army responded with a pair of three's to
push the score to 26-12. The Black Knights led by as many as 14
points in the frame, 28-14, and took a 29-17 advantage into the
intermission.
American struggled from the floor in the opening period,
connecting on just 5-of-21 attempts. The Eagles' first four baskets
all came from beyond the arc as the team went 18-plus minutes
without a two-point field goal. Moldoveanu tallied a team-high
eight points in the first half with two rebounds while Nick
Hendra chipped in four points and three rebounds. Army
was led by Josh Miller's eight points as the Black Knights shot
44.4 percent from the field and hit 4-of-7 shots from three.
Chris Walker scored on three consecutive trips down the court to
help Army build a 39-21 lead less than three minutes into the
second half. Army would later go on a 15-2 run and pushed its lead
to 54-25 with 12:12 to play.
Stephen
Lumpkins scored five straight American points and was
followed by a pair of Moldoveanu free throws to move the score to
57-37 but it was as close as the Eagles would get. The teams traded
baskets down the stretch until the final buzzer sounded the 68-48
Army victory.
Moldoveanu scored a game-high 22 points on 9-of-16 shooting from
the floor. The junior tallied 14 points in the second half and hit
6-of-8 shots in the frame. Luptak chipped in eight points with two
rebounds and Lumpkins added seven points and a team-high seven
boards.
The Eagles connected on 12-of-18 shots in the second half and
finished the evening shooting 43.6 percent. American also held a
slight 26-23 rebounding advantage but committed 19 turnovers to
Army's 7, resulting in a 27-6 edge for the Black Knights in points
off turnovers. As a team, Army shot 54.0 percent from the floor and
50.0 percent from three. Miller led the Black Knights with 15
points while Walker notched 14 and Hence added 11.
American will return to action on Saturday, January 23, at home
in Bender Arena against Holy Cross in the team's annual 'Phil
Bender' game live on RCN Cable. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
