American University's Barry Goldberg recorded his 500th career
win Saturday afternoon as the Eagles defeated NJIT, 3-1, in the
team's second match of the American Volleyball Classic. Goldberg is
the 25th active coach and 43rd all-time to reach the 500 win
milestone.
"There are a lot of things along the way that mean a lot to your
career and this is certainly a nice accomplishment," Goldberg
refelected. "There are so many things that have happened along the
way. What it really makes you do is make you look back at all the
things that have happened prior and make you wonder in amazement
how its even gotten to this point."
Among Coach Goldberg's numerous accomplishments are 10
conference championships, including eight consecutive in the
Patriot League, and 10 NCAA Tournament appearances in the last 12
years.
American was led offensively by Angelina Waterman who tallied a
career-high 22 kills, nine digs and three block assists. She was
aided by Claire Recht's 11 kills and Cassandra Ricketts eight.
Recht also notched six total blocks in the win while Ricketts
totaled four. Krysta Cicala dished out 50 assists with four
blocks.
NJIT (8-2) got the best of American in the first set, 25-21, but
it was all Eagles the rest of the way. With the score tied at 10 in
the second set, American used a 5-1 run to open a four point
advantage and a second 5-1 spurt to cruise to set point, 25-16.
American never trailed in the third set, opening a 6-0 lead to
start, and led by as many as eight points before taking the frame,
25-20. The two teams were tied at 16 in the fourth and final set
before the Eagles seemed to take control, opening a 21-17 lead.
NJIT battled back to tie the score at 24 however before consecutive
kills by Waterman sealed the victory.
