WASHINGTON, D.C. - The 23rd-ranked American
University men's soccer team was defeated by Princeton, 3-0, on
Friday afternoon at Reeves Field.
Josh Walburn, Matt Sanner and Antoine Hoppenot scored
second-half goals for Princeton (3-0) to come away with the road
victory. Walburn's goal came in the 49th minute on a
penalty kick after an American foul inside the goalbox. The Tigers'
second strike came in the 59th minute by Sanner from close range
off a rebound. As American (2-1) pushed forward on offense,
Princeton's Hoppenot was able to add a third goal, knocking home a
shot from the right side after controlling a loose ball.
The best scoring chance for American came with just over four
minutes remaining in the first half. From the right side, sophomore
Jack
Scott fired the ball across the front of the net into
traffic. The ball was deflected by a Princeton defender just wide
of the goal.
The Eagles were outshot in the contest, 17-13, and Princeton
held a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. Junior Mike
Worden led American with three shots, including two on
goal.
American will return to action on Sunday, September 13 with a
trip to Monmouth. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
