Box Score
The American University men's soccer team hosted Colgate on
Saturday afternoon at Reeves Field, and fell by a final score of
1-0. The Eagles finish the regular season with a 4-2-1 Patriot
League record, and will be either the No. 3 seed in next weekend's
conference tournament, which will be contested at Bucknell.
After a scoreless first half where neither team had great
scoring chances, Colgate (8-8-2, 4-3 PL) was the first to strike in
the 58th minute. The Raiders' Mike Garzi fed a pass down the middle
of the field to a streaking Alex Weekes, who got behind the AU
defense. Weekes did the rest, beating Eagles' goalkeeper Matt
Makowski for the match's only goal.
After falling behind 1-0, American (9-6-2, 4-2-1 PL) increased
the intensity on the offensive end, and had several legitimate
scoring opportunities late in the match. Colin
Zizzi fired shot from close-range with under 16
minutes to play, although it was saved by Colgate goalkeeper Grant
Reed. A few minutes later, AU's best chance came off a beautiful
cross by Christopher
Liebner to Cameron
Petty, who was stationed just in front of the goal.
Petty's header struck the left post and bounced right back to Reed.
Overall, it was a relatively evenly-played match, which was
reflected in the statistics. Each team recorded 10 shots and four
shots on goal. Junior Daniel
Shannon led the Eagles with four shots.
The Eagles conclude the regular season with a 9-6-2 record, and
their conference record of 4-2-1 place them in a tie for second
place with Lehigh. American will be the No. 3 seed in the
conference tournament next weekend against No. 2 seed Lehigh
(Lehigh wins the tiebreaker to be the No. 2 seed). Bucknell claimed
the regular season crown, and the right to host the four-team
conference tournament, which will begin on Friday.
