The American University volleyball team lost in the Patriot
League Tournament Championship Match on Sunday to Army, 3-0, in
West Point, N.Y. Junior Magdalena
Tekiel recorded 15 kills but the Eagles combined to
hit just .202 against a solid Army defense while the Black Knights
finished the match with a .328 hitting percentage. Army earned the
victory by set scores of 25-16, 25-16, 28-26.
American (18-12, 11-3) held an 8-7 lead in the first set before
a 5-0 Army (26-5, 12-2) run put the Black Knights up for good. Army
increased its advantage to 19-12 on a Francine Vasquez service ace
and later earned set point, 25-16, on an Ariana Mankus kill.
The Black Knights never trailed in the second set, opening a 4-1
lead to begin the frame. Consecutive Tekiel kills brought American
back to within one, 9-8, but Army would go on to score 11 of the
next 13 points to take a 20-10 lead. The Eagles would record points
off back-to-back Army errors to bring the score to 23-15 but could
not complete the comeback as a Rachel Dunn kill ended the set,
25-16.
American matched Army point for point early in the third set
before a quick 3-0 run by the Black Knights gave them a 14-10
advantage. The Eagles fought back valiantly brought the score to
16-15 on a Tekiel kill but a Brittany Jensen service ace reopened a
20-17 lead for Army. Back-to-back Tekiel kills evened the score at
21 and began a 10-point stretch in which the team's would be tied
five times. With the score even at 25, an Army error gave American
a shot at set point, 26-25. The Black Knights, however, would go on
to score the match's next three points to earn the victory, 28-26.
Tekiel recorded a team-high 15 kills in the loss and finished
her afternoon with a .308 hitting percentage and six digs. Angelina
Waterman added eight kills and five digs while Claire
Recht chipped in seven kills. Kysta
Cicala notched 27 assists with nine digs and Cynammon
Burns totaled 22 digs.
Tekiel and Recht were named to the Patriot League All-Tournament
team for their efforts over the weekend. Tekiel averaged 3.33 kills
per set in the two matches with a .281 hitting percentage, four
aces and 11 digs. Recht, meanwhile, totaled nine blocks, a .289
hitting percentage and averaged 2.67 kills per set.
