Women's Soccer Drops 1-0 Decision at Princeton

Box Score

The American University women's soccer squared off against Princeton on Monday night in its final non-conference match of the season, and fell by a final score of 1-0. Princeton (4-6-1) scored the lone goal of the match in the 45th minute on an unassisted Lauren Whatley strike from just inside the goalbox.

After potent offensive attacks in its previous two victories that results in a combined six goals, American (6-7) struggled to find its rhythm. The Eagles only recorded three shots on goal, with freshman Carleigh Morba firing two of them. Senior Kelsey Brasher was responsible for the other shot on goal.

In the match, Princeton outshot the Eagles 10-6, and held a slight 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Tigers earned six corner kicks compared to two for American.

Princeton goalkeeper Alyssa Pont recorded the shutout, recording three saves. American's Arianna Efstathiou made three saves in 90 minutes of action, lowering her season goals against average to 1.02.

"I think we played with a lot of heart and effort for 90 minutes," American Head Coach David Bucciero said. " We were a little unlucky not to get a goal in the second half. If we continue to play with the determination that we played with tonight, we will have a lot of success with our remaining games."

American will return to Patriot League play against Holy Cross on Friday, October 9 at 4 p.m. The Eagles and Crusaders were the only two teams to earn victories in the opening weekend of conference play last weekend.
