The American University men's soccer team came up on the short
end of a 2-0 decision at Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon in
Worcester, Mass. The loss breaks the Eagles' nine-match unbeaten
streak.
The two squads played scoreless soccer for the majority of the
match before Holy Cross (5-10, 3-3 Patriot League) got on the board
with a goal in the 80th minute. The Crusaders' Tom Van Grinsven
converted the unassisted goal. Holy Cross added its second goal
less than five minutes later on Kyle Miller's third goal of the
season, putting the match out of reach for American (9-4-2, 4-1-1
PL).
Holy Cross outshot the Eagles by a slim 11-9 margin, although
the Crusaders held a 7-1 advantage in shots on goal. American's
Daniel
Shannon led the Eagles with six shots, one of which
was on goal.
Matt
Makowski played all 90 minutes in goal for American,
registering five saves.
The loss was the first for American in its last 10 matches. The
Eagles had previously not lost a game since September 19 when they
fell to William and Mary.
The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday, November 3, when
they travel to Charlottesville, Va., to battle the 10th-ranked
Virginia Cavaliers. Match time is set for 7 p.m. American will
close out the regular season at Reeves Field next Saturday,
November 7 at 1 p.m. against Colgate.
