Army Claims Comeback Victory Over American, 59-49

WASHINGTON - Alex McGuire scored a game-high 18 points to lead Army to a come-from-behind 59-49 win over American University in Patriot League women's basketball action at Bender Arena on Wednesday.

American (7-12, 1-3 PL) held a 10 point, 34-24, lead courtesy of an 8-2 run in the opening minutes of the second half. Up seven, 40-33, after a Liz Leer layup, Army began to chip away at the deficit. Cara Enright turned a steal into a fast break lay-in at 11:08 to put the Black Knights down 40-38. Army embarked on a 10-0 run over the next three minutes and took a 49-42 lead and never looked back, claiming a 59-49 win.

Army (12-7, 3-1 PL) jumped out to a 7-2 to begin the first half when Alex McGuire connected from behind the 3-point arc. AU responded with a matching 7-2 run that culminated in one of Talicia Jackson's three treys in the first half to knot the score at 9-9 with 12:49 to play in the half. With the score tied at 15-15 at 5:29, Jackson hit her second 3-point basket to give the Eagles the 18-15 lead. Jackson and Liz Hayes hit back-to-back threes down the stretch to open up a seven point AU lead, 24-17, and went into the intermission up 26-22.

The Eagles held a massive advantage on the boards, 43-29, but only were able to convert 11 second chance points. Pam Stanfield and Stephanie N'Garsanet led AU in scoring, each recording 12 points. Talicia Jackson tallied 11 points and added four assists in the loss.

McGuire finished with 18 points, two assists and two steals. Enright scored 12 points and dished out two assists.

American will travel to Holy Cross on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. tilt with the Crusaders in a Patriot League contest.
