WASHINGTON - The American University volleyball
team defeated Howard University Tuesday night, 3-0. The win
improves AU's record to 4-0, matching the program's best start
since the 2001 season.
American won in straight games for the third time in four
matches, 30-10, 30-20, 30-22. Three Eagles recorded seven kills
including Julia
Borecka (Bielsko-Biala, Poland/Iliceum IM. Mikolaja Kopernika),
Katerina
Cinkova (Morgan Hill, Calif./Live Oak) and Claire Recht (Canby,
Ore./La Salle). Borecka also had three service aces, tying freshman
Angelina
Waterman (Queens, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) for the match high.
Recht had a team high seven total blocks with one solo and six
assists, while Waterman also notched six block assists.
In game one, the Eagles dominated the visiting Bison with
accurate attacks and flawless execution. AU recorded 11 kills and
zero errors on 27 attack attempts, collecting a hitting percentage
of .407. Borecka smashed three of her seven kills in game one and
recorded all three of her aces on consecutive serves.
AU again tallied 11 kills in game two. Recht matched Borecka for
a game high four kills and recorded the first ace of her career.
Recht and Waterman smothered the Bison attack in game three,
each finishing with five total blocks. The two teamed up for four
blocks in a span of seven plays. Recht also recorded a solo block
in the same sequence. Cinkova led AU offensively, smashing six of
her seven kills in the frame.
AU will be in action three times this weekend when it travels to
Brigham Young University for the Molton Classic, Aug. 31 and Sept.
1. Competing with the Eagles at the tournament will be host BYU,
the University of Wisconsin and the University of Northern Iowa.
Both Wisconsin and BYU were featured in the American Volleyball
Coaches Association Top 25 ranking this week, as the Badgers ranked
10th and the Cougars ranked 15th.
