AU Volleyball Defeats Georgetown in Season Opener

WASHINGTON - The American University volleyball team began its season on a high note Friday, defeating cross-town rival Georgetown University, 3-0, in the season opener.

The Eagles were led by Rubena Sukaj who recorded 15 kills on 33 attack attempts and also led the team with three service aces. Sophomore Claire Recht had a career night for AU as she connected on seven kills and blocked five Hoya attack attempts. Christina Nash was also impressive in the victory, recording 21 assists.

Freshman Cassandra Ricketts played like an upperclassmen in her collegiate debut. After earning the start, the right side hitter quickly proved she belonged by hitting .417 with five kills and recording nine digs.

The match, played at George Mason University as part of the D.C. Volleyball Challenge, was the first of three for the Eagles this weekend. On Saturday, August 25, AU returns home to Bender Arena where they will play two matches in a day/night doubleheader. At 11 a.m. American will take on GMU. In the nightcap at 7 p.m. AU will be in action against George Washington as they host their inaugural "Bender Blue Out."
