WORCESTER, Mass. -
The American University men's soccer team's undefeated streak in Patriot League play ended on Saturday when the Eagles lost in overtime at Holy Cross, 3-2.
After a scoreless first half by both teams, in which the teams combined for just six shots, all the scoring in regulation came in just over eight minutes of the second period.
American jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the game. The Eagles got on the board first. Freshman Mike Worden scored first for the Eagles, when his blast hit the crossbar and made its way over the line for an unassisted tally in the 57th minute.
The Eagles tacked on another score just over two minutes later when junior Anthony Moy scored his first goal as an Eagle in the 59th minute. Great ball movement by AU resulted in an open net that Moy slammed the ball into. Things were looking good for the Eagles, as they had allowed just five total shots at this point, forcing Chris Sedlak to make just one save.
However, things turned on the Eagles quickly. HC pulled within one just a few minutes later on an Alejandro Melean penalty kick, then knotted things up in the 65th minute when Kyle Miller scored.
Both teams remained scoreless the rest of the way, with neither team even registering a shot.
Early in the overtime period, AU dodged an early bullet when a deflection off an AU defender was saved by Sedlak. However, the Eagles couldn't hold off the Crusaders' Miller again, when he tallied his second goal off a cross just six minutes into the first overtime.
American falls to 3-1-1 in PL play, and 6-8-2 overall. Holy Cross remains undefeated in PL play at 3-0-2. American, with 10 points, now falls to third place in the PL, behind both Colgate (13 points) and HC (11 points).
The Eagles return to action on Sunday, Nov. 4, when they host Colgate on Senior Day.
