WASHINGTON -
Lindsey Miller (Oakton, Va./Oakton) scored early and Jana Lee (New Providence, N.J./Summit) added two more goals in the first-half as the American University women's soccer team rolled to a 3-0 win over Richmond Friday afternoon on Reeves Field.
In a dominating performance from start to finish, American capitalized on its early opportunities and never looked back. Miller got the scoring started just under three minutes into the game when she deposited the ball to the lower left corner after Kelly McLaughlin (West Windsor, N.J./Plainsboro) headed the ball to her feet inside the box. It was Miller's first goal of the season and McLaughlin's third assist.
Lee provided the offense from there, beating a defender at the top of the box and shooting the ball past the outstretched goalie into the right corner for AU's second goal. Just eight minutes later, in the 42nd minute, Lee outran the defense on a tremendous counter-attack through ball from Katelynn Donovan (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) and then juked past the fallen goalie for the easy open-net goal and the 3-0 advantage.
American would challenge several more times in the match, building up a 16-7 shot advantage, and would not face serious opposition from Richmond who only put four shots on net - none from inside the box.
The win was AU's first in six tries versus the Spiders and breaks the Eagles' winless streak from the last four matches.
Now 5-3-1, American hosts Robert Morris in its next match, this Sunday, at 1 p.m. on Reeves Field.
