Volleyball Cruises to 3-0 Win Over Howard

WASHINGTON - With an all-around team effort, the American University women's volleyball team took just over an hour to dispatch cross-town opponent Howard, 3-0 Friday night in Bender Arena. The Eagles hit .314 and accumulated 17 service aces in the 30-14, 30-17 and 30-10 win.

AU ran away with the match from the start, hitting .456 en route to a 30-14 win in game one. From there the Eagles rolled to a 30-17 and 30-10 win in the second and third games with neither close.

Every Eagle contributed to the team's win. Freshman Julia Borecka (Bielsko-Biala, Poland/Iliceum IM. Mikotaja Kopernika) hit .333 from the left side with 10 kills and five service aces to go with a solo block. Junior Chelsa Brooks (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) was perfect on the attack with seven kills on seven attempts and contributed two service aces. Setter Christina Nash (Princeton, Fla./Coral Reef) was equally dangerous on the attack and setting up AU's offense, sneaking in five kills on seven attempts to go with 13 assists. Senior captain Elizabeth Maloney (Toronto, Ontario/Richview C.I.) scorched the Lady Bison for eight service aces in 2005, and in 2006 was able to chalk up five more.

Defensively, the Eagles held Howard to a negative hitting percentage of -.016 with just 16 kills.

American returns to the court for its two matches tomorrow, facing New Jersey Institute of Technology at 11 a.m. then versus Manhattan to wrap up the AU Classic at 7 p.m.
