Women's Volleyball Dismantles UMES, 3-0

WASHINGTON - The American University women's volleyball team hit a combined .396 and took just 1:08 to dismantle the visiting UMES Hawks, 3-0, in Bender Arena Friday night. With the win, American improves to 13-6 on the year and winners of seven straight.

The first two games were never close as American crushed the ball at .500 and .433 precentages respectively to 30-10 and 30-6 wins. While the third game was more competitive, the Eagles kept an easy 10 point cushion from midway on to the 30-20 win.

Individually the team was led by a great all around performance from freshman Ivana Cebakova (Brno, Czech Republic/Ludvika Danka) who registered the first double-double of her career with a 10 kill and 10 dig performance. Outside Hitter Rubena Sukaj (Tirana, Albania/Asim Vokshi) added 12 kills and four service aces while middle blocker Chelsa Brooks (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) had 12 kills on 20 attempts with zero errors and four block assists.

As a team, the Eagles continued their strong defensive up front with 11.5 total team blocks - its second straight double-digit block performance. Freshman Ann Recht (Canby, Ore./La Salle) led the way with two solo blocks and four block assists. Setter Christina Nash (Princeton, Fla./Coral Reef) who also had four kills and 15 assists notched five block assists and Elizabeth Maloney (Toronto, Ontario/Richview C.I.) had one solo block and two assists to go with six kills.

American has almost a week off before hitting the road for matches against Colgate and Bucknell, Friday and Saturday respectively.
