Men's Soccer Downed by Penn, 2-0

PHILADELPHIA - The American University men's soccer team dropped to 5-9-1 overall with a 2-0 loss at the University of Pennsylvania Wednesday night.

In a rough-and-tumble affair, in which 41 total fouls where whisted, Penn's Derek Hobson put the Eagles in an early hole when he curled a 30-yard blast into the top left corner of the net in the eighth minute.

The hosts added to their lead in the 20th minute when John Rhodes nabbed his second goal of the season on a point-blank header off a cross from Alex Grendi.

American became more aggressive after the Quakers' second goal, hoping to come back. However, the aggressive play resulted in four AU yellow cards.

Penn outshot AU, 13-6. Five of the Eagles' shots came off the feet of junior midfielder Garth Juckem (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Jesuit).

Eagle goaltender Chris Sedlak (Valrico, Fla./Bloomingdale) stopped six shots but took the loss.

American plays in its final regular season game this Saturday, Nov. 5, versus Army at 1 p.m. With a win, American will win the Patriot League regular season title and earn the right to host the Patriot League Championship Tournament on Nov. 11 & 13. With a loss, the Eagles, who have already qualified for the tournament, would go to the winner of the Lafayette/Lehigh matchup scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday.
